During gaming this week, your child used insults that included: Description of sexual acts.
Tips for dealing with Sexual Content expressed by your child (6-10)
1. Explain that you got a notice that they had used some sexual words during a computer game.
2. It’s common for kids to experiment with sexual language during elementary school, and they may find it easier to experiment with it over video and computer games rather than in person.
3. Ask what language they used so you can tailor your response–did they just name anatomical parts vs. use disturbing slang?
4. Ask why they used sexualized language–was it to be silly, to be shocking, or mean?
5. Different parents are more or less tolerant of cursing. If you haven’t already, you should talk with your child about your rules and preferences about children cursing. Explain that cursing at home when there is no one around is different from cursing in the game, when they could be upsetting or angering other kids.
6. Explain that they should avoid sexual words, since they can be extra offensive to others. Help your child understand that things don’t always come across the way we intend them to online, and so we have to be extra careful with our words.
