Age 6-9

  • Explain that you received an alert about language that may be inappropriate. Let them know you just want to help them feel comfortable while gaming.

  • Let them know that certain words, even if they seem funny, can make others uncomfortable and are not okay to use.
  • Teach them that some insults, especially those about body parts, can be hurtful, even if they don’t mean to make someone feel bad.

Age 10-12

  • Confirm the game is appropriate for their age group here.
  • Tell them even if they hear other gamers use sexual jokes or comments, these can make others uncomfortable and should be avoided.
  • You can share that you understand kids their age may use this language as a joke or teasing, but it can easily offend or hurt others.
  • Encourage them to set a positive example by treating others with respect, which presents them as a friendly gamer who are fun to play with.
  • You may suggest that when they focus on positive interactions, which can help them to form real friendships in gaming.

Age 13-18

  • When talking to teenagers about sexual insults in gaming, it’s important to approach the conversation with sensitivity and understanding. Acknowledge that inappropriate comments can be common in their age group, but emphasize that just because it happens often doesn’t make it okay. Stress that everyone deserves respect and that respecting people’s privacy, including their own, is crucial in building meaningful and healthy communication. Encourage them to speak up against sexual insults, whether through reporting or addressing them calmly, and remind them that creating a respectful environment enhances everyone’s gaming experience.
