That is why we have to be careful, words are powerful. They can either encourage others or make them feel down. So if we are angry, maybe we can take a deep breath and think, how can I say this without making anyone feel bad?’”
- Remind them they can be reported by another gamer: “Besides being removed from the game, it’s also just not okay to make others feel less than us. It’s important to stay respectful, so everyone enjoys the game without feeling put down.”
- Encourage them to use respectful words, even if the gaming is heated.
- Teach them that using harmful language to belittle others or assert power isn’t acceptable, even if they feel frustrated or angry.
- Explain that hate speech can be considered harassment, and in certain cases, even a crime. “If we use language that is hateful or threatening, it’s not just hurtful, it could even lead to trouble outside of the game. Let’s make sure we are not only having fun but also keeping things positive and safe for everyone.”
Age 13-18
- “Hey gamers! We know that sometimes intense games can bring out toxic language, and as teens, you might hear or use harsh words. Remember, keeping the gaming environment positive makes it more fun for everyone. When others use toxic language, you don’t have to match their language. Showing respect and staying cool is a true power move. By focusing on the game, you can set a great example and make the gaming fun and friendly”.
