Tips for a Supportive Conversation about Insults in Gaming

Your child was exposed to insulting comments in the game.

What is Flaming

Flaming is displaying hostility towards other players in a game by insulting, swearing or using otherwise offensive language towards them.

Recommendations for Flaming

1. Let your child know you were notified about flaming in a game they played. Let them know you’d like to help them–you want gaming to be fun and not stressful!

2. Ask whether they experienced aggression. Find out what was said and whether they were upset by it.

3. If they felt hurt or upset, be sure not to minimize what happened. Tell them that you understand that they feel hurt or upset and you would feel the same way if that happened to you.

4. Explain some of the reasons other kids might engage in flaming.

  • They may not be thinking about the impact of their words on others.
  • They may put others down in order to feel better about themselves.
  • They may be getting worked up and overly stressed by the game, which can lead to bad choices!
