Ages 6-9
- Start by saying “I learned you may have heard some unkind language during your game.”

- Ask how they feel about what they heard, and does it make them sad, angry, or confused. This helps them process their emotions.
- Show them how to mute a player if they encounter someone saying unkind words, so they can continue enjoying the game without interruptions.
- Help them block or report the player who used offensive language.
Ages 10-12
- Start by explaining, “I heard you experienced hate speech while gaming, and I want to help you feel safe”.
- Explain that hate speech is the language used to insult someone based on their race, religion, or other characteristics.
- Ask how they feel about what they heard, and does it make them sad, angry, or confused. This helps them to express themselves.
- Encourage them how to mute or block a player if they encounter offensive language again.
- Let them know that hate speech often aims to make people feel bad about who they are, and it’s an unfair way to try to feel powerful over others.
Age 13-18
“Hey gamers! We know that in intense games, you might come across players who use toxic or even hateful language. Remember, you don’t have to put up with this behavior, you can report or mute those players directly through the gaming platform. Sometimes, other gamers might use hate speech without fully understanding how hurtful or harmful their words can be. Reporting this behavior helps create a better gaming environment for everyone.”
