Hate Speech Recommendations

Your child was exposed to hate speech in their game.

Tips for Conversation with the Child

1. Explain that you learned that your child was exposed to hate speech during their game.

2. Explain that hate speech is abusive language based on prejudice against someone for their race, nationality, religion, or sexual orientation.

3. Assess and find out what was said. Let your child know that you would like them to share these things with you so that you can support them, keep them safe and make sure they’re enjoying their gaming time.

4. Find out how your child feels about the words that were said to them. If the comments were made directly to your child, find out it they feel angry, offended, hurt and/or upset. If they didn’t understand the meaning of what was said, you can explain it to your child.

5. Explain that hate speech is often used to belittle someone else or make them feel bad about who they are. It’s usually the worst kind of insult.

6. Explain why people make abusive comments based on characteristics — it’s often because they feel powerful when they exclude someone or make them feel part of a hated minority group.

7. Help your child block or report the person who used hate speech.
