Your child shared personal details or someone asked your child for personal information.

1. Explain to your child that you have been notified that they shared personal information in the game, such as their location, phone number or credit card information.

2. Ask your child which details they shared in the game and explain to them that sharing personal information is not a good idea and should not be a part of the game.

3. Talk with your child about the risks of sharing personal information. Sometimes gamers pretend to be someone else and try to trick others into sharing personal information in order to harm them.

4. Explain to your child which topics they can talk about with strangers, for example, favorite tv shows, first name, the character they like in the video game.

5. Explain to your child that even if they are playing with friends, the chat is public, so they need to be aware of what they are saying and sharing.

6. If you’re talking with a tween, teach them about predators online. Let them know they should never share photos/videos of themselves with a stranger, never share personal information such as their address, phone number, password, names of family members, or dates of special events with strangers. If they feel uncomfortable with the conversation in the game, they should come to you and share what happened.

7. If you’re talking with a younger child, explain to them that sharing passwords/ email addresses with strangers online is dangerous, even if they are suggesting help or currency in the game.

8. Teach your kids that their conversation with gamers needs to stay on the same platform. They shouldn’t move to a different app to communicate with a stranger.
