Sexual Content Recommendations

During a game this week, your child was exposed to sexually aggressive comments.

Tips for conversation for Sexual Content (11-14):

1. Explain to your tween/teen that you were notified that someone had made sexualized comments to them or other gamers they were playing with. Ask them what was said and how they felt about it.

2. Assess whether this sexual language had any impact on your child and adjust your response accordingly. If they have been exposed to this language on a regular basis it may not have registered with them. If it was done as an insult, then it was likely upsetting.

3. Explain that some players may use sexual comments to exert power or to act threatening, which is absolutely unacceptable. Validate your tween/teen’s feelings about this experience: let them know the other player crossed a line and acted very inappropriately. If this was the case, the player should be reported and/or blocked.

4. If this happens repeatedly, ask your tween/teen to re-evaluate whether this game (or this group of players) is still enjoyable and comfortable for them, and recommend taking time away from that particular game.
